Water is feed, health and climate control
Estimate peak—not average—demand for animals, cleaning, cooling and fire protection. Provide backup storage and delivery routes. Separate drinking systems from dirty drainage.
Protect quality
- Test source water for relevant microbial, chemical and salinity risks.
- Keep tanks covered and clean; prevent backflow and wild-animal contamination.
- Size pipes, pumps and drinkers for simultaneous peak use.
- Inspect leaks, flow and drinker height daily.
Use consumption as an alert
Sudden changes in water use can precede visible production or health problems. Record meter readings by house, pond or group and compare with weather, feed and output.
Drought and failure plan
Document emergency suppliers, storage duration, generator or gravity options and trigger points for reducing stock before welfare is compromised.
