Home-mixed feed can reduce cost only when the farm can consistently buy suitable ingredients, formulate correctly, weigh accurately, mix uniformly, control contamination and verify results. Cheap ingredients do not automatically create cheap nutrition.

Minimum requirements before mixing
- A qualified species nutritionist or validated formulation system.
- Current nutrient analysis or reliable specifications for every ingredient.
- Accurate scales for macro- and micro-ingredients.
- A mixer with demonstrated uniformity and written batch sequence.
- Dry, pest-controlled, labelled storage with first-in/first-out rotation.
- Controls for mould, mycotoxins, chemical contamination and prohibited ingredients.
- Batch numbers, supplier records, formula approval and retained samples.
- A transition and performance-monitoring plan.
Safe alternative-feed evaluation
Crop by-products, food-processing residues, forage trees, insects and other local materials can be useful, but safety and nutrient value vary. Check species suitability, anti-nutritional factors, pesticide or toxin risk, moisture, spoilage, legality and seasonal consistency. Introduce changes gradually and never test an unverified ration on the entire herd or flock.
