Shrimp

Shrimp aquaculture can be commercially valuable and biologically fragile; water, seed, biosecurity and power reliability are critical.

Start with the whole system

Water and pond preparation, seed quality, feeding, biosecurity and harvest controls. A sound plan connects welfare, environment, nutrition, health, labour, records and economics. Improving only one element rarely fixes a weak system.

Housing and environment

Prepare ponds or systems carefully, manage inlet/outlet biosecurity and maintain emergency capacity for oxygen or water-quality events.

  • Design for normal behaviour, safe handling and easy cleaning.
  • Prevent crowding, heat stress, injury, escape and predator access.
  • Plan waste, drainage and neighbour impact before stocking.

Feeding and water

Feed by biomass, growth and observed tray response. Overfeeding increases cost and water-quality pressure.

Feed labels are not interchangeable. Species, age, production stage and local ingredients change requirements. Seek a qualified nutritionist for commercial formulation.

Health and biosecurity

Use tested post-larvae where available, control movement, monitor water and behaviour, and respond quickly to abnormal mortality.

  • Record normal intake, production and behaviour so change is visible early.
  • Buy from traceable sources and isolate new or returning animals.
  • Do not use antibiotics, dewormers or vaccines without species- and location-appropriate guidance.
  • Report unusual clusters of sickness or death through local veterinary channels.

Breeding and lifecycle

Hatchery and broodstock systems require specialist expertise and disease controls beyond ordinary grow-out.

Business and records

Stress-test feed price, survival, energy, crop failure, processing, cold chain and export or domestic quality requirements.

Use the Animal Farm Planner for scenario testing, then replace its baseline assumptions with local quotations and conservative performance estimates.

Welfare and legal responsibility

Owners remain responsible for humane care, competent handling, suitable transport, lawful sourcing and compliance with animal-health, environmental, food-safety and wildlife rules. These differ by country and sometimes by state or province.

Urgent signs: breathing distress, collapse, uncontrolled bleeding, severe bloat, poisoning, seizures, difficult birth or several animals becoming ill rapidly require immediate professional help.

Further verification

Use Animaliversal as a structured starting point, then verify decisions with a licensed local veterinarian, agricultural extension service and the references in our source library.
